Dutch Drops is a remedy that has been around for years. Most stables have a bottle on hand.

The active ingredients are Oil of Turpentine and Sulphur.

Dutch Drops has two main uses:

  1. As a diuretic. A diuretic acts on the kidneys to increase the excretion of water and along with it, the waste products of muscle metabolism. The diuretic action of Dutch Drops results from the increase in renal blood flow. Horsemen have used diuretics for years: they talk about "giving the kidneys a good flush-out". There are more modern diuretics available but they cannot be used prior to competition
  2. As a treatment for mild colic. Horse-owners are often reluctant to call the vet immediately that their horse has colic. They prefer to see if a dose of Dutch Drops and walking the horse alleviates the symptoms. Often it will, but it is important to realise that some colic's can be very serious and time is crucial.
